Pattern Identifications for J. Michael Pearson's "Encyclopedia of American Cut and Engraved Glass, Volume 1"

 For a number of years Paul Miles worked with a select group of other ACGA members who enjoy identifying cut glass patterns. What began as an intellectual exercise for improving ones ability to identify patterns grew into a coordinated effort by Paul to put this information onto paper so that other ACGA members could benefit.

 The identifications reported here are largely derived from Paul’s database and is the second in a series of pattern identification papers. This paper addresses J. Michael Pearson’s, “Encyclopedia of American Cut and Engraved Glass, Volume 1″. Additional pattern IDs for Volumes 2 & 3 will be printed in a subsequent HOBSTAR issue. The following table of Additional Pattern Identifications lists the Book (Volume 1), Page number in the book, the Location of the item on the page, the Cutting Firm that produced the glass, and the Identification Source used for identification. There are 174 additional pattern IDs provided for Volume 1. For example, P#I, page 201, pictures a Libbey item in the “Comet” pattern. Ken Howe recently sent in a Libbey advertisement that gives the correct name of this pattern as Lenox.

 In order to conserve space, an ACRONYM KEY following the ID table defines the acronyms used in referencing the identification sources.

 Our purpose is to add to the knowledge of ACGA members and should not be interpreted as a criticism of the pioneering authors who worked so hard to produce the books we all enjoy and value. Since publication of these books, the ACGA has published catalog reprints, which have made additional pattern identifications possible. We request that you share your additional pattern identifications with us so that the information can be provided in turn to a11 ACGA members. Contributors to the database include Craig Carlson, Ron Noll, Tom Marple and numerous others.
